Troy is a Hudson River town ensconced in a long rich history; before the arrival of the Dutch in the mid 17th century, the land had been occupied by the Mahican Indian Tribe for centuries. It officially became a village in 1796. At one time Troy was the fourth wealthiest city in the United States due to its robust industrial steel and iron economy and hence is the home to fabulous gilded era architectural treasures including the many brownstones and ornate churches that populate the historic downtown area. Troy is a story of resilience. In 1862 a significant part of the historic downtown part of Troy was destroyed by a fire that started from sparks from a locomotive, however, fire-ravaged buildings were salvaged and other grand structures were built in place of those completely destroyed. By the late 19th century the downtown area emerged triumphant in its rebuilt splendor. Troy experienced a drastic decline in its wealth in the middle of the twentieth century however Troy has undergone a rebirth and now it is the home to the famous Troy Farmer’s Market ranked #1 in the country, many thriving vibrant new businesses including boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, pubs but also cutting edge technologies due to the influence of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
